2010 Block of the Month
The Education Committee has provided the tip sheets below for each month with the colors and any tips that would be helpful in making the block. Please use batiks for the block of the month. Please note that each pattern has a link a the web site where you will find directions.
To honor some request from members for different sized blocks, the blocks are not all 12 inch finished blocks. Be sure to check.
With the exception of the paper pieced flower, and the appliqued leaf, all pattersn come from Marcia Hohn's Quilter's Cache website. Please be sure to support her shop and advertisers and to honor her terms for use!
There are two new, to the Education Committee, web sites that we would like to share by introducing the paper pieced flower from www.yvonnes.dk/ and the appliqued leaf from www.free-quilt-patterns.net.
Note that the colors for the fat quarters and the blocks of the month are different.

16 ½ INCH UNFINISHED BLOCK
COLOR 1: LIGHT BLUE
COLOR 2: DARK BLUE
COLOR 3: CREAM
This block is put together following the instructions from Marcia Hohn’s pattern. The cutting instructions are on the second page.
PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS AN ORIGINAL PATTERN FROM MARCIA HOHN.
“Items made from Original designs should bear on a permanently sewn on tag on the quilt back: the name of the pattern As I have it named, and that it is from The Quilter's Cache/Marcia Hohn. Should the quilts be shown at quilt shows, that info should also appear in any written materials about the quilt.
"Online" Quilting Groups may provide TEXT links to my patterns to have their members come here to the Cache and get specific patterns. Should photographs of items made from Original designs be posted on your group web site, they should also be clearly marked with the name of the pattern As I have it named, and that it is from The Quilter's Cache/Marcia Hohn.
Individuals may make items for themselves, for gifts, for charitable donation or for sale from any of the Traditional block patterns. (Sales may not include the pattern itself or any portion thereof) The for sale portion of this paragraph refers to items made by one person, and not mass production situations. [Please keep in mind that while the BLOCK design may be Traditional, on most patterns the Quilt Layout I show, though it may be using a Traditional block pattern, is an ORIGINAL quilt layout design ...so you'll need to make your own quilt layouts if you want to sell them] “

AUGUST
Farm Friendliness
http://www.quilterscache.com/F/FarmFriendlinessBlock.html
12 1/2 INCH UNFINISHED BLOCK
COLORS: 3 fat quarters will make this block
LIGHT GREEN
DARK GREEN
FLORAL
PLEASE NOTE: THIS HAS BEEN CHANGED TO A 12 ½” UNFINISHED PIECED BLOCK INSTEAD OF A 6” PAPERPIECED BLOCK.
Cut 2 light green 4 7/8 squares
Cut 2 dark green 4 7/8 squares
Cut 1 dark green 4 ½” square
Cut 1 strip of the light green 2 ½”
Cut 1 strip of the floral 2 ½”
Use your favorite technique for half square triangles such as Marty Mitchell templates, Kathy Buirge’s handout, etc.
Lay the light and dark green 4 7/8” squares right sides together, draw a diagonal line on the lightest fabric.
Sew scant ¼” seam on both sides of the line and then cut on the line. Square to 4 ½”. This will make four 4 ½” half square triangles.
Sew the light green strip and the floral strip together. Press the seam towards the darkest fabric. Cut four 4 ½” squares.
Arrange the pieces and sew the block together. The unfinished size should measure12 ½”.
SEPTEMBER

12 ½ INCH UNFINISHED BLOCK
BACKGROUND COLOR: BEIGE
LEAF: ORANGE
Cut the background block 12 ½ inches.
Steam a Seam 2 is recommended. Just follow the directions on the package for sticking the leaf onto the background fabric.
Use hand embroidery or machine to stitch around the leaf and veins.
OCTOBER
ROUND ROBIN
http://www.quilterscache.com/R/RoundRobinBlock.html
PIECED AND APPLIQUE 8 ½ INCH UNFINISHED BLOCK
COLOR 1: RUST
COLOR 2: MULTICOLOR
APPLIQUED CIRCLE: THIS CAN BE ANY COLOR or DESIGN.
The Education Committee chose to cut a design from another fabric for the appliquéd circle but a plain fabric could be used as well. This is another place to use the Pellon Designer’s Sheer interfacing because the piece can be ironed in place and will not move when you hand or machine appliqué it in place. A CD works great as a circle template.
Square to 8 ½ inches
NOVEMBER
LOG CABIN
http://www.quilterscache.com/L/LogCabinBlock.html

PLEASE NOTE: INSTEAD OF MAKING ONE 12 1/2 INCH UNFINISHED BLOCK, MAKE FOUR 5 ½ INCH UNFINISHED BLOCKS. THE UNFINISHED BLOCK WILL MEASURE 10 ½ INCHES.
The technique on the website is the same as if you were making the 12 ½ inch block. But you will only need a center, 2 greens and 2 blues.

DECEMBER
CRAZY QUILT
http://www.quilterscache.com/C/CrazyQuiltBlock.html
12 ½ INCH UNFINISHED BLOCK
This is a good block to use all those wonderful Batik scraps.
Follow the directions on the Marcia Hohn’s web site.
TIPS: A fusible interfacing such as Pellon Designer’s Sheer works better than Muslin. This will keep the block from warping as pieces are added because each one can be pressed in place.
Cut it 14” instead of 12 ½”. This will allow for any shrinkage that occurs when embroidery stitches are added either by hand or machine. It seems to work best to do the embroidery whenever another piece is added.
Square to 12 ½”.
